Ray Doustdar explains how his high cholesterol lead him to give up pill form supplements and start juicing and “buiced-ing” (pronounced “boosting”).
Doustdar: Long story short for me, after thinking I was a pretty “fit” guy, at least externally, a blood test in Feb. 2012 revealed my cholesterol was high (234), as was my LDL (low-density lipoprotein—the bad cholesterol, 132).
My doctor wanted to put me on Lipitor [a brand of cholesterol-lowering drug], as high cholesterol does run in my family and currently my dad, mom, and brother are all on statins [a class of drugs used to lower cholesterol].
After watching several documentaries on plant-based nutrition and then juicing, I bought a juicer and started juicing fresh veggies. I was hooked immediately, and in 4 months, my cholesterol went from 234 to 168 (down 28 percent). Juicing [also] gave me portion control and helped curb my cravings.
Epoch Times: What misconceptions do people have about juicing? What should they know?
Doustdar: Let me start off by saying that when it comes to juicing, the two things you should NOT do are:
1. Do not use juice fasting as a long-term approach.
2. Do not use juicing as a “cleanse.”
Why not? The goal of juicing is to supplement your day with bioavailable nutrients that will help you to be healthier and feel better, all so you can live better.
Fasting and cleansing are not things that can become sustainable in your daily routine. If you are eating clean and healthy [food], your body is cleansing itself every single day…. Juicing as a cleanse or as a fast treats juicing more as a “quick fix” instead of health solution. Just like anything in life, unless you sustain it, you will end up right back where you started.
There is also the misconception that it takes a lot of time and that it is messy. Well, if you know what you are doing and follow my instructions, you will find these things not to be true. An important point I want to get across is that to reap the optimal health benefits, I have found that you need to do it everyday.
What has been really interesting as well is that during this journey that I have been on to improve my health, I discovered that although the leafy greens are packed with phytonutrients, they lack many essential vitamins and minerals.
I tried taking vitamins in pill form after each juice, but they upset my stomach. (I would get nauseated when I took pills. With or without food, I could count on feeling nauseated for a good 20 minutes each time I took my pills. Also, I actually got a few of those horse pills stuck in my throat a few times, which was not pleasant.) Then I learned liquid vitamins are more readily available for easy absorption, 98 percent vs. 10-20 percent for pill forms, I decided to solve my own problem and created BUICED to boost my juice.

Doustdar: This is true, and this is why I recommend the 90/10 rule.
That is that you should juice 90 percent veggies and 10 percent fruits. Or another thing I tell people is to eat your fruits, juice your vegetables. That way you get both.
